Temporary Cap Removed From Blown-Out Gulf Well

Fox News\ AP -- Engineers removed a temporary cap Thursday that stopped oil from gushing into the Gulf of Mexico from BP's blown-out well in mid-July. No more oil was expected to leak into the sea, but crews were standing by with collection vessels just in case.

The cap was removed as a prelude to raising the massive piece of equipment underneath that failed to prevent the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

Lovely. Maybe they should create an at-sea memorial with the failed equipment to the poor fools who died?

"A 12-person government evidence team is waiting to take possession of the blowout preventer when it reaches the surface." Twelve people to watch someone else work...spend that tax money.

The investigation of the blow-out preventer may allow significant improvements in the design.

Since the well has been effectively killed by the mud & cement injections, retrieving the one device that was supposed to prevent the tradegy in the first place is paramount. Hands on inspection and dissection is the only way to find out why the blowout preventer didn't do just that.

Since it was a temporary cap, this had to happen. Leaving a temporary cap in place is just asking for more problems.

I doubt if we will ever get told the real truth about what happened and how much oil actually was released.

When they retrieve the failed backup . . . .I'd be interested in learning who manufactured it; where did the raw materials come from; was the engineering faulty; and what were the testing conditions. Since it was so crutial in stopping this type of spills it should have worked.

it would be interesting to see what failed and why. not every day that you have that opportunity. with the oil stopped, they can now weld a permanent cap on the well.
